What are medical peels?

Medical peels are treatments aimed at improving the visible structure of skin tissue. They use various exfoliating solutions, such as acids. These peels, in various degrees, directly or indirectly affect the dermis, where the regeneration process is stimulated, depending on the type of acids and the depth achieved.

Because medical peels can be applied at various depths in the skin, the results can vary. These range from accelerating the skin's natural exfoliation process to the complete removal of the epidermis and various parts of the dermis, especially through coagulation or protein breakdown.

Applications for a Benebellum peeling

  • Skin aging
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Irregular skin
  • Sagging, dull skin

What are melasma and hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces excessive pigment. This phenomenon occurs mostly in women with (lightly) toned skin (skin types 4-6). Research has shown that several risk factors contribute to the development of hyperpigmentation, including:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Sunlight exposure
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Medication
  • Cosmetic products
  • When hormones are responsible for hyperpigmentation, it is also known as melasma, also known as a pregnancy mask. Melasma manifests as dark, irregularly shaped patches on the cheeks, nose, upper lip and/or forehead.
  • Hyperpigmentation can manifest superficially (epidermal), be deeper in the skin (dermal), or be a combination of both. The most common form of hyperpigmentation is the superficial (epidermal) variety, where the pigment (melanin) is spread throughout the epidermis. In this case, a Benebellum peel is effective.
  • A mixed or deeper (dermal) form of hyperpigmentation requires a more intensive treatment such as a TCA peel.

What is the cause of hyperpigmentation?

The underlying cause of hyperpigmentation is excessive activity of the pigment-producing cells, melanocytes. This overactivity can have several causes, including:

  1. Melanocytes receiving signals to produce large amounts of melanin
  2. Degradation of collagen
  3. Abnormalities in the skin barrier
  4. Oxidative stress
  5. Sunlight exposure (UVA, UVB and HEV - High Energy Visible - light, the blue light emitted by artificial light)

Importance of tranexamic acid, hexylresorcinol, vitamins A, C, E and blue filter

Years of research into the cause and treatment of hyperpigmentation and melasma have demonstrated the efficacy of these ingredients:

  • Tranexamic acid: An amino acid that reduces redness caused by vascular growth and provides a brightening effect.
  • Hexylresorcinol: An organic compound with anti-inflammatory properties, inhibits pigment production and has an analgesic effect.
  • Vitamins A, C and E: Powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory effects that stimulate cell renewal, wound healing and collagen formation. Pigment production is also reduced through the application of highly concentrated vitamin C to the skin.
  • Blue light filter: Protects the skin from the harmful influence of HEV (High Energy Visible) light. HEV light, generated for example by screens, contributes significantly to skin damage from light (8x more than UVA, UVB and UVC).
  • Long-term use of these ingredients significantly reduces pigment production and activation.
